Leadership
Melinda Ickes received her Ph.D. from the University of Cincinnati in 2010. She is currently the Assistant Dean of Research for the College of Education and Professor in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Promotion. She also has a joint appointment in the College of Nursing where she serves as the Co-Director of the Tobacco Policy Research Program of the BREATHE (Bridging Research Efforts and Advocacy Toward Healthy Environments) research team. She serves as Director of the AppalTRuST Career Enhancement Core, a center focused on tobacco regulatory science.
As a University of Kentucky Research Professor, Dr. Ickes has extensive experience in college and youth health promotion, including tobacco prevention, and has worked with university and community partners to reduce the prevalence of emerging tobacco products among at-risk youth and young adults. Through state and national funding, the #iCANendthetrend initiative has reached nearly 20,000 Kentucky youth to support reduced tobacco use initiation.
Her research interests also go beyond tobacco control, including community-engaged research, youth empowerment, health equity in substance use prevention, and evidence-based program planning and evaluation.
Dr. Ickes serves as the Health Promotion Program Faculty Chair and Director of the Graduate Certificate in Health Coaching. She has taught a variety of specialized undergraduate and graduate courses in health promotion including Human Health and Wellness, Program Planning, Health Promotion and Behavior Change, College Health Promotion, Community Organizing and Health Promotion, and Worksite Wellness

Hannah Brown
My name is Hannah Brown! I am from right here in Lexington, Ky. I am a first year graduate student in the Master's in Health Promotion program and a Research Assistant for #iCANendthetrend. I am interested in exploring different health communication methods and increasing health literacy for all populations, especially relating to tobacco prevention. Outside of research, I love rock climbing and biking!
Gabrielle Cochran
My name is Gabrielle Cochran, and I am from Columbus, Ohio. I am one of the program coordinators for #iCANendthetrend at the University of Kentucky. I'm interested in tobacco/vaping prevention, addressing health disparities, and community empowerment. Outside of research, I enjoy reading, cooking, and walking my dog (he's a pit mix with a TON of energy). One fun fact about me is that I collect interesting mugs.

Griffin Nemeth
My name is Griffin Nemeth, and I am from Mason, Ohio. I am a PY1 in UK’s College of Pharmacy as well as the Youth Advisory Board Coordinator for #iCANendthetrend. I'm interested in youth tobacco prevention and several clinical research areas. Apart from being a researcher, I am a musician and exercise enthusiast.
Kylee Pipgrass
My name is Kylee Pipgrass, and I’m from Glasgow, Kentucky. I am the project coordinator for UK's Bingocize Project. I have an MPH concentrating in health behavior from UK. I’m interested in nutrition and physical activity both for young adults and the aging population. Outside of research, I enjoy hiking, yoga, and aerial silks. One fun fact about me is I am the staff advisor for UK’s Circus Club!
Antoinette Rodriguez
Antoinette is originally from Michigan, but has called Kentucky home for 11 years! She is a proud mother of three with a passion for helping others. She hopes to be able to create safe, engaging environments throughout the community.
